ALNNJ 2006 Scholarship Awards

The 2006 ALNNJ Scholarship Awards dinner was held on September 21st at Bergen Community College in Paramus, NJ . The following is an excerpt of Frank Cunha’s speech given at Awards Ceremony:

This year the Architects League Scholarship Committee received applications from many students . Applications were submitted from Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Pratt Institute, and locally from New Jersey Institute of Technology . Among the applications and portfolios there were three students whose studio projects and academic work shined brighter than the others . It is with great pleasure that I announce the winners of the 2006 Architects League Scholarships:

The Clarence Tabor Memorial Scholarship Award is given to undergraduate students entering their fifth and final year of architecture, and is based on scholastic excellence, attitude toward the profession, and probable success as an architect. The 2006 recipient for this award is Veronica Quintero from NJIT . Steven Brossok, AIA, Partner at Studio 5 states: “Veronica has proven to be a conscientious, hard working young professional who is eager to learn . Her positive, professional attitude and constantly expanding skill set have proven an asset to our firm .” It is evident in Veronica’s grades and portfolio work that she is determined and possesses the analytical and creative sense to contribute to our profession . She graduates in 2007.

Albert O . Halse Memorial Award is g iven to undergraduate students for excellence in architectural delineation and/or architectural models . This year’s recipients are Carmela Tripodi of NJIT and Paul Wong from Georgia Tech . Unfortunately, Paul cannot be with us here today . He is back at school working hard to complete his Architectural degree . What impressed the jury was Paul’s ability to prepare a well-crafted portfolio depicting a range of his talents . His passion for design and the “production process” of design was evident in his submission . He is a passionate young individual who has launched his own production company and website: PAWproductionz .com . The P .A .W . represents his initials and he even created a logo for his portfolio and business cards . This entrepreneurial spirit will be a driving factor for Paul when he graduates in 2008.

Excerpt from Paul Wong’s (Georgia Tech) portfolio submission:

Carmela’s portfolio is one step away from being a coffee table book . Her use of graphics shows maturity especially for an incoming third year student . Her portfolio was dynamic and well prepared and the images were crisp and appeared to jump off the page . Philip Facendola, Recreational Director for the Borough of Moonachie writes: “Carmela is a model student and a dedicated worker for the children of our community . She has been responsible for supervising our End of the Year Talent Show and doing decoration designs for our recreation program .”

Carmela is also this year’s recipient of the Architects League Scholastic Achievement Award given to undergraduate & graduate students for scholastic excellence in architectural design . Carmela made the Dean’s list all four semesters and has a GPA of 3 .6 . Her dedication to great design and good grades will make her a valuable asset when she graduates in 2009.

Each of the awards given tonight total $2500 which has already been forwarded to the student’s Bursar’s office . The total scholarship awards presented this year total $10,000 .

On behalf of the Architects League Scholarship Committee I thank everyone involved in making this year's scholarship program a success . I especially thank the family of the Winners, the Board of Trustees, Stacey Kliesch, Terry Durden, and Michael Busch . I also thank Scott Lurie, Bill Severino, and Bobby Kaplan who served with me on the jury; and Kim Vierheilig, our Golf Outing Chair, and all those who helped and supported this year’s golf outing . I also thank each and every one of you for your efforts in making the scholarship awards program more successful each year.

In addition to the 2006 Architects League Awards, Stacey Kliesch and Frank Cunha also presented the awards to Carmela Tripodi and Veronica Quintero at this year’s NJIT Awards Night at NJIT’s School of Architecture on September 25th, 2006 . Also presented that evening were the A IA National Awards Component Scholarship Grant certificates . Frank Cunha, the Architects League Scholarship Chair for the past 4 years, prepared a grant application where last year’s Architects League scholarship recipients Robert LuBuono and Renata Mayhew were awarded an additional $2000 above and beyond the awards given by the Architects League for a total of $4500 each . The award contributions provided by AIA National help support our profession's emerging leaders at a local and state level .
