ALNNJ 2004 Scholarship Awards

The 2004 ALNNJ Scholarship Awards dinner was held on June 17th at The Hermitage in Ho-Ho Kus, NJ. Excerpt of speech given at Awards Ceremony:

On behalf of the scholarship committee I would like to thank everyone involved in making this year's scholarship campaign a successful one. I especially would like to thank the board of trustees, Scott Lurie and William Severino who served as reviewers, and Fay Logan, our president.

This year the scholarship committee has unanimously selected two scholarship award recipients. Both Mohamed Elshahed and Dave Rittinger are deserving of these awards and will benefit greatly from the honor and financial assistance from these awards while concluding their undergraduate architecture studies at accredited universities. They both look forward to becoming licensed architects and contributing to architecture in the state of New Jersey.

Clarence Tabor Memorial Scholarship Award.

The Clarence Tabor Memorial Scholarship Award is g iven to undergraduate students entering their fifth and final year of architecture, and is based on scholastic excellence, attitude toward the profession, and probable success as an architect. Mohamed K. Elshahed is entering his fifth year at NJIT. His GPA is well above 3.0 and he has demonstrated determination in his design studios as well as his other courses. Mohamed's portfolio was well put together and he has the skills required to become a successful architect.

“ Mo was one of the strongest students in a reasonably strong class, demonstrating a remarkable industriousness combined with a high degree of formal facility His drawings and model making ability was especially impressive, and he utilizes these tools effectively as a means of interrogating and developing his proposals. In recent projects I have reviewed, he has produced work with gratifying consistency and is unrelenting in pursuing projects. Mo responded to criticism with enthusiasm and openness – working diligently to address the salient issues raised in reviews and discussions. Further, his work was inventive and generally well-conceived, and he demonstrated the capacity to materialize sophisticated thought in architectural terms.

Albert O. Halse Memorial Scholarship Award

This award is given to undergraduate students for excellence in architectural delineation and/or architectural models. Unfortunately, we do not have a recipient for this award this year.

Architects League Scholastic Achievement Award

The Architects League Scholastic Achievement Award is given to undergraduate students for scholastic excellence in architectural design. David Rittinger, Jr. is entering his third year at NJIT. David plans to graduate in 2007 and has earned a GPA of 3.5. His interactive Power Point presentation was well done and shows much promise. He is capable of building professional models and he is not afraid to experiment with different mediums.

Interestingly, while we are a very wired studio, and David can do a computer presentation very well, he chose to use a much more personal and difficult approach for his final board for the competition presentation – watercolor. It was terrific! All in all, he had a superlative presentation for his project. As well, he organized the rest of the studio in aiding him, as required, for the participation phase in the competition. He also worked with the masons in an exemplary way to insure the building of his design.
